A. Phillip Berard, age 90, of Crawfordsville, Indiana, peacefully passed away on January 21, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was a reserved, quiet, soft-spoken Easterner hailing from Springfield, Massachusetts.
Phillip was born on June 1, 1930 to Aime Philius Berard and Mabel (Trudell) Berard in Springfield, Massachusetts. After Phillip graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1948, he pursued a degree in Chiropractic at Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Indiana. During his time in Indianapolis, he met and married his wife, Joyce Carole Shoaf. They had two sons, Kimball Dirk Berard and Kevin David Berard.
After graduation, he practiced as a Chiropractor out of his home in Kingman, Indiana. During that time he also held a job at R.R. Donnelly & Sons in Crawfordsville, Indiana. As he progressed in management positions at Donnelly, he eventually decided to make that his career. He retired in 1996, after a 39-year long career at Donnelly.
Through the years, he thoroughly enjoyed attending his two sons’ activities, from sports events to speech competitions. Later, he and his wife, Joyce, spent as much time as possible with their grandchildren, traveling to whatever city his sons happened to live in at the time.
He was a talented pianist, who enjoyed music, photography, reading, and traveling. He was known by everyone for his gentleness, kindness, and inviolable integrity.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Crawfordsville, where he very much enjoyed reading the scripture texts during Sunday worship services. He was also a member of Kiwanis International.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Shoaf), two sons, Kimball Dirk Berard (Diana Drake) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kevin David Berard (Cathy Dodds) of Lafayette, Indiana; six grandchildren, Whitney Hope Berard, Joshua Phillip Berard, Christian Dirk Berard, Ethan Parker Berard, Russell Alan Berard, and Rachael Lynn Berard; and three great grandchildren, Havanna Rose Berard, Milo Edward Berard, and Anna Claire Berard. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosemarie (Berard) Grasso of Massachusetts.
Visitation will be at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S Washington St, in Crawfordsville on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 1:00pm till the time of the funeral service at 2:00pm. The service will be live streamed and recorded which can be viewed on Phillip’s obituary page at www.sandersfuneralcare.com. Burial will follow at Kingman Fraternal Cemetery.
