Mr. Alvin A. Ray, Sr., 88, Crawfordsville, formerly of Ladoga, passed away Wednesday, February 27, at 7:00 AM, in the Bickford Cottage Assisted Living of Crawfordsville. He was born June 19, 1924, in Lothair, Kentucky, to James F. and Loueva (Cochran) Ray. He married Hazel M. Williams on June 11, 1945. She preceded him in death in 2010.
Mr. Ray was a U. S. Army veteran having served in WW II in the European Theater of Operations as a Private and Lead Scout in the 6th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Division and received The Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in several Bishoprics and later served a seven-year mission with his wife in the Chicago, Illinois, LDS Temple. He retired from RR Donnelleys where he had been a Material Handler. In his free time he enjoyed working in his big garden, fishing, playing golf, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his six daughters: Saundra (Eugene) McClure, Crawfordsville; Linda (Stan) Himes, Crawfordsville; Brenda (David) Noe, Manchester, Tennessee; Theresa (Rusty) McIntyre, Lake Holiday; Regina (Jeff) Hiatt, Muncie; Tonya (Wyatt) Qualls, Crawfordsville; his son: Paul (Pati) Ray, Lexington, Kentucky; granddaughters: Kim (Michael) Clark and Kelly (Greg) Price, both of Crawfordsville; a brother: Junior Ray, Kentucky. He will also be greatly missed by his 24 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son: James Ray; son and daughter-in-law: Arnie and Beth Ray; brothers: Cornett William, Walter, Cecil, and Clarence Ray; grandson: Clay Priebe; great grandson: Josh Vanhook.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 3:00 PM in the Crawfordsville Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1086 N. 125 W and Oak Hill Road, with Bishop David Morgan conducting. Burial will be in the Ladoga Cemetery. Friends may call at the Powers-Priebe Funeral Home on Friday, March 1, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Saturday, March 2, for one hour prior to the service at the church.
