Carl Andrew Moore, 99 years, of Crawfordsville, IN passed away into the presence of the Lord Wednesday evening while at home.
Mr. Moore was born in Roanoke, Virginia, to Rubin Peter and Nannie Susie (Henry) Moore. The family moved from Virginia to Greencastle, IN as farmers. Carl married Ellen Lucile Mahorney of Ladoga, IN on August 4, 1934 at Crawfordsville First Baptist Church by Rev. Barney Antrobus. After residing several years in Greencastle, they moved to Raccoon, IN establishing Moore's Apple Orchard, fresh-press cider mill, and The Cider Sip Restaurant. In the late 1940's with their move to Crawfordsville (on 16 acres on West Market Street), they enlarged their business to include strawberry and raspberry patches and an evergreen nursery. In the 1970's and 1980's, the Moore's lived in West Palm Beach, Florida on the Louis and Lavina Vaughn Garden Estate. They served as orchid social and grounds coordinators in association with the National Orchid Society of America. They returned to their Crawfordsville home in 1990 where Carl lived until his death. Even through his late 80's and mid 90's age, he so enjoyed being employed by Kroger (south location) where he continued doing what he loved to do, interacting with the people of our community.
Surviving are his wife, Lucile, of a 78 year marriage, and their only daughter, Joyce Marie Fry, three grandchildren: Jeffrey Christopher Fry (with wife Heidi) of Crawfordsville, IN and Janelle Kristina McClure and Julia Elizabeth Fry of Westfield, IN, and five great-grandchildren: Joshua Christopher Fry, Kyle Jeffrey Fry, and Amanda Rosina Fry of Crawfordsville and Hannah Christine McClure and James Merle McClure III of Westfield, IN. Preceding Carl in death were his parents, two brothers, and five sisters.
Early in their marriage, the Moore's were members of the Ladoga, IN Church of the Brethren. When moving to Crawfordsville, they joined membership with The First Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees at the time of the transition from downtown Walnut and Pike Street location to St. Rd. 32 East. He was also a part of The Open Door Sunday School Class. Mr. Moore was commissioned by The Gideon's International to establish the Montgomery County Crawfordsville Chapter serving as its first president. He was instrumental in organizing other Gideon Camps throughout Indiana and Kentucky. Mr. Moore served as an area representative in Indiana and Florida with The Billy Graham Crusades International.
He was loved as a husband, father, and gentle man with a deep faith in God. His friendship was an inspiration. His love was a blessing. His joy was living his faith, working an honest days labor, caring for his family, and chatting with friends.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Powers-Priebe Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 1:30 pm with the service at 2:15 pm. Rev. James L. Ranard will officiate the service with a private burial at the Ladoga Harshbarger Cemetery.
