Conrad Gene Perry Sr

Conrad Gene Perry Sr. age 83 of Kingman passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, February 18, 2019. He was born in Fountain County on March 14, 1935 to the late Gerald William and Mildred Delcey (Keller) Perry.

Conrad attended Rabb School in Fulton Twp.   He left home at a young age of 12 working for a local farmer before becoming a heavy equipment operator for Lee Pickle road construction crew at the age of 15.  Destined to be a businessman he opened a small service station at the intersection of SR41 and Yeddo Road.  Drafted to the U.S. Army in 1958 he closed shop and quickly married his life’s love, Peggy Jeanne McGinnis, January 16th of that year.

After being honorably discharged from the service, He and Peggy purchased their first farm where they still resided when he passed.   Conrad was a lifetime farmer as well as business man operating multiple coal mines and gravel quarries throughout Fountain County as well as working the trades as a union millwright.  Conrad worked as a dragline operator for Fountain County Highway Department in the 70’s.  He was in the dragline and bulldozing excavation business as well as owning and operating Conrad Perry Company and FK&P bridge construction.  During the economic slowdown of the early 80’s he took a job with British Petroleum managing the Shand  Mining Company  near the town of Cates, IN.  Upon closing of the mine he stayed on with BP as a land acquisition and leasing agent until around 1988 when he opened his Silver Island Gravel  Quarry still operating today.  Conrad was a horse man, well known state wide as a breeder of quality Quarter horses.   Horses and cattle were his passion, working with both being his favorite pastime.

He was a member of Freedom Christian Church, the Moose Lodge and the American Quarter Horse Association.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Peggy Jeanne Perry;  two sons, Conrad Gene (Wataneka) Perry Jr.  and Daniel  William (Lyrae Moody) Perry; three daughters, Tammy Ann (Ron Smith) Perry, Pamela Dawn (Greg) Clingan, and Amy Joann Musser;  one brother, Terry Lee Perry; 8 grandchildren, Kayla ( Terry) Holt, Amanda (Allen) Strawser, Hannah Clingan, Matthew (Jordon) Perry, Laurel Reynolds, Alicia Reynolds, Sadie (Nathan) Lewis, and Isaiah Musser; and 9 great grandchildren, Kaydence, Reis, Remi, William, Jude, Eli, Addysyn, Annabell, and  Nova.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Loretta Hope Riley, Winona Joy Jackson, Margaret Ann Smith,  and Geraldean  Robbins; one brother, Gerry Perry; and a granddaughter, Arista  Jean Perry.
