Mr. Delbert Thomas Hayes, age 68, passed away Thursday afternoon January 10, 2019 at the home of his daughter. Delbert was born on April 3, 1950 in Franklin county, KY at the home of his grandmother to Willie G. and Clara Jean (nee: Johnson) Hayes. He graduated from high school in Richardsville, KY and shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army and served in Viet Nam from April 1970 to March 1971, where like so many others he was exposed to agent orange. After his discharge he married the love of his life, Anne Ladd in 1972 and she preceded him in death. Delbert worked for many years as a driver for Yellow Freight before he became ill. His is survived by his daughter: Angela D. Hayes and her companion, Richard Jeffers of Waynetown, IN; son, Michael Gordon and his companion Paula Rayburn of Wingate, IN. Step children Kenny & wife Michelle Blick of Kentucky, Paul and David Blick, of Bowling Green, KY and Tonya Saltsman of Madison, IN. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Guy Cole of Richardsville, KY along with 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Besides his wife, Delbert was preceded in death by his brothers Earl, Gerald, Steve and Donny Hayes.
Delbert requested that he be cremated and to have his ashes returned to his home area in Kentucky. In lieu of flowers the family recommends that memorials be made to the Indiana Veterans Home, Military Family Relief Fund, 2851 North River Road, West Lafayette, IN. 47906. Shoemaker Funeral Home is honored to assist the family with these arrangments.
