Dennis Ray Weir, age 70 of Crawfordsville, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at home while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Crawfordsville on June 12, 1951 to Kenneth Weir and Mary (Holman) Weir-Wommack.
Dennis graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1969 and attended Vincennes University for a year before he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. In 1975 he started working for the Crawfordsville Fire Department for 33 years, 16 of those years he was the Fire Chief. Some of his biggest accomplishments were starting the cities paramedic service which was for prehospital advance life support services and he fought wildland fires in Oregon. After he retired from the Fire Department, he worked at the Montgomery County Jail, and then the Montgomery County Highway Department. He was a member of the New Richmond Masonic Lodge #604. He ran the Fairway Military Surplus Store for many years, enjoyed the outdoors, loved hunting, and was always looking for an adventure. He was a man of many talents, the rock of his family, and was an amazing storyteller.
On July 18, 2004 he married Elaine Melvin, who survives. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Weir- Wommack; a step son, Tony Hamm; a sister, Michele (Randy) Borden; two step grandchildren, Eric and Sydney Hamm; niece, Ashley (Ryan) Tice; nephew, Andrew (Anne) Borden; great nieces, Taylor and Alexandria Tice; special cousins, Mark (Barbara) Gibson and Alicia Webb; uncle, Mike Czworniak, aunt's Becky Gabhart and Marlene (Billy) Holman; sister-in-law, Rosalie (Jim) Ballard; and a brother-in-law, Larry Melvin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Weir; brother, Derrick Weir; and step-son, Michael Hamm.
Visitation will be at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S Washington Street, in Crawfordsville on Sunday, October 10, 2021 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. The funeral service will be Monday, October 11, 2021 at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Howey officiating. The service will be live-streamed and recorded which can be viewed on his obituary page at www.sandersfuneralcare.com. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors provide by the United States Army and Byron Cox Post 72 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Shop with a Firefighter, PO Box 69, Crawfordsville, IN 47933 or the American Cancer Society.
