Mrs. Eleanor Hostetter Herr, 97, Clemson, South Carolina, formerly of Montgomery County, passed away Wednesday, June 13, at the Cottingham Hospice House, Seneca, South Carolina. She was born November 16, 1914, in Bainbridge, Indiana, to Howard Henton and Blanche Estelle (Miller) Hostetter. She married Remley Herr, December 4, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Eleanor began her list of achievements by earning an AB (Social Work) Degree from DePauw University in 1937, and a MS (Library Science) Degree from Purdue University in 1965. She went on to teach at Alamo High School and later at Crawfordsville High School, where she was the chair of the English Department.
She was a member and served proudly as ruling Elder at the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, Crawfordsville. More recently, she was an associate member of the Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, Clemson, SC, where she spent her winters. Many organizations benefited by her active membership; including Delta Zeta Sorority at DePauw; New Market Girl Scouts; Crawfordsville Art League Group E; Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Organization; Sigma Chapter of Tri Kappa, Ladoga; and served on the first board of the Old Jail Museum. She was also active in heritage organizations, including roles as: Honorary Regent of the Dorothy Q. Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Organizing Regent of the Crawfordsville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists; Honorary State Regent of the Daughters of the American Colonists; Honorary National Vice President of the DAC; Honorary State Regent of the Daughters of Colonial Wars; charter member of the Order of the Descendants of Ancient Planters; Indiana Historical Society; Montgomery County Historical Society; the Huguenot Society; the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne; the
Colonial Dames XVII Century; and the Dames of the Court of Honor.
She will be greatly missed by her four surviving daughters: Diana Bennett (John) Collins, New Market; Nancy L. (Dale) Linvill, Clemson, South Carolina; Sally B. Herr, Portland, Maine; and Cheryl (Mark) Herr-Rains, Vienna, Maine. Also surviving is her sister: Dorothy Himes, Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother: Sam Hostetter.
A public graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 19, at 3:00 PM at the Oak Hill North Cemetery, Crawfordsville, with Rev. Jack Jefflee officiating. Friends may call at the Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville, on Tuesday, from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM.
