George W. (Jr) Barker passed away Sunday night, February 14th at Franciscan St. Elizabeth in Crawfordsville. He was born December 21, 1927, in Lafayette Indiana to George O. and Hollis K.Wilson Barker. He lived in Romney during his pre-school years, then moved to Waynetown.
He married Mary E. Hughes of Veedersburg, in 1957 and they celebrated their 58th anniversary in November and she survives. They lived in Waynetown and attended the Waynetown Baptist Church. George worked in the office of Tru Lay Block Company in Waynetown for 32 years.
He graduated from Waynetown High School in 1945 and played on the 1944 Basketball team which traveled to the Semi State. He was in the first class of inductees to the Montgomery County Basketball Hall of Fame. He attended Purdue University where he played Freshman baseball under coach Hank Stram and with Moose Skowran. George was in the Army during the Korean war, was also a 50 year member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge.
George and Mary moved to Crawfordsville, but continued their interest in North Montgomery and Purdue Sports, making long vacation trips to follow Purdue basketball and football.
Surviving along with his wife are his brother, James Barker (Pat),; special niece and nephew, Carla and Jim Whitehead; nieces: Cindy Jeffries (Allen); Vanessa Homsher, Vicki Rush; Michelle Daniel (Rick); nephews: Scott Hughes (Jackie), Larry Thomas, and Matt McDonald.
Services will be held Thursday, February 18th at 2:00 PM at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron Raffignone officiating, with burial following in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Calling will be at the funeral home on Thursday from Noon until the service time. Military Rites will be conducted at the funeral home by the Crawfordsville VFW and American Legion Posts Honor Guard and the U. S. Army. Online condolences may be sent to: powerspriebefh.com.
