Gifford "Earl" Nichols, age 85 of Veedersburg, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the Waters of Covington. He was born in Gila, Illinois, on February 15, 1939, to the late Fred & Lena Jean (Walters) Nichols.
Earl graduated from Kingman High School in 1957 and attended Purdue University for 2 years before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. He worked at RR Donnelley's for 15 years, then worked as a mechanic for Indiana University Bus Service for 18 years. He also worked as an usher for the IU basketball and football games. He was an umpire for many baseball and softball games in Fountain County. He loved collecting rocks and bells and played Santa Claus for many years. He volunteered at the Salvation Army and was an avid member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints. He loved talking to people and never met a stranger.
He is survived by two brothers, Les (Freida) Nichols of Mississippi and Murray Nichols of Veedersburg; a sister, Joyce Nichols of Veedersburg; a daughter; several stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Norma Nichols; an infant son, Marvin Nichols; and a brother, Ben Nichols.
Cremation was chosen with burial of cremains next to his infant son, Marvin, at Centennial Cemetery in Kingman at a later date.
