Gregory Curtis Kincaid (December 10, 1941-March 27, 2015)
Greg Kincaid died peacefully in the early morning of March 27, 2015 surrounded by his beloved family. Greg bravely fought a long hard battle with lung cancer. Legendary sports announcer, Stuart Scott said "When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live." Greg beat cancer each and every day because he lived life to the fullest. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, nor help a friend or a neighbor when needed. Many considered him ornery and reveled in pulling off practical jokes at family gatherings.
Greg was born on December 10, 1941 to Marion and Helen Kincaid and became one of five sons. He terrorized the countryside with his gang of brothers and had many mischievous stories about their childhood. He joined the Air Force and was stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska where he met and married Sharon Snyder on August 19, 1964. Greg and Sharon returned to Indiana where they raised three children in Darlington. Greg was always eager to help out each one of his children whether it be coaching a baseball team or attempting to help with their home work. Greg worked at R.R. Donnelly for 38 years. Greg volunteered on the Darlington Fire Department for 25 years while making many friends throughout the community.
Greg has six grandchildren and each one of them had a special place in his heart. Greg once paid five dollars for a picture that one grandson painted and had only priced at fifty cents in an effort to earn enough money to travel to Hawaii. Greg was extremely proud of all his grandchildren and was known for telling the same story multiple times because he was just so proud of them. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, which brought great joy to him, and often told his very own children that "I don't ever remember you kids being that cute, sweet, smart, fun...." whatever the adjective his grandkids always did it better.
Aside from spending time with his family, Greg loved to golf. He enjoyed being around the game so much he worked at Rocky Ridge Golf Course each summer. Greg loved to fish but enjoyed teaching the grandchildren how to fish even more. This past summer, Dean, Carl, and some of the grandchildren surprised Greg with an elaborate fishing trip in Northern Minnesota.
He refused to give up till his body was ravaged by this terrible disease. Greg loved to tinker in his garage and always had many projects going at the same time. He often told his family it was a good thing he retired so that he could fix everything that was broken at the kid's homes. The past few months were hard for everyone but especially on Greg since he was very independent and stubborn. One of the things he missed was driving himself down to the mini mart and having coffee with his buddies each morning. If he was having a good morning, Sharon would drop him off to enjoy coffee and stories with his friends. Greg lectured his children about missing work to take care of him but they were all happy to assist along with Sharon.
The family would like to thank the Gentiva Hospice Team for being so helpful during this difficult time. The family would also like to thank everyone for prayers, support, and love provided to them during Greg's fight. Greg is preceded in death by his parents: Marion and Helen, and brother: David. Greg is survived by Sharon Kincaid, wife of fifty years and children: Cindy and Chad Olimpio, Dean and Jane Kincaid, and, Carl and Samantha Kincaid and grandchildren: Patrick Olimpio, Madison and Morgan Kincaid, Jackson, Georgia, and Chet Kincaid. Also survived by brothers: Kenny, John, and Donnie.
A Celebration of Life for Greg will be held April 4, 2015. It will take place at the Congregational Christian Church of Darlington at 101 Academy Street, Darlington Indiana.
