Mr. James I. Painter, 76, Brownsburg, and formerly of Crawfordsville, passed away Tuesday, December 24, at 10:08 PM in the St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born October 9, 1937, in Washington, DC, to David and Ruth (Dunn) Painter. He married Arlene G. Gonzalez on July 14, 1962, in Waukegan, Illinois. She survives.

Mr. Painter retired from RR Donnelleys in 1992, where he had been an Industrial Engineer. Prior to his employment in Crawfordsville, he had worked for 5 years at Johns-Manville Corporation in Waukegan. After his retirement he worked at the Brownsburg Wal-Mart. He was a graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington,DC; received his Bachelors Degree in Engineering from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania; and received his MBA from Butler University. He was a member of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church; member of the Brownsburg Kiwanis Club; former member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club; was a CASA Volunteer; had written and published the book, "Emotional Success"; had been the Tennis Coach for Northridge Middle School and North Montgomery High School; and in his free time enjoyed playing golf and tennis.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters: Pamela (Neil) Karle, Crawfordsville; Elizabeth (Steve) Howen, Indianapolis; Amy (Danny) Walls, Crawfordsville; and Amber (Michael) Pfotenhauer, Greenwood. Also surviving is his sister: Judy (Alex) Wargo, Mooresville, North Carolina; his brothers: Michael Painter, Palm Springs, California; Dan (Nancy) Painter, France; and 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday, January 2, in the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, 307 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville, with Dr. John Van Nuys officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill South Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Thursday in the church from Noon until the service time. Memorials may be made to the church.
