Mr. James "Jim" Ross Shillings, 86, Crawfordsville, passed away on Sunday, September 11, at 3:15 AM, at the Hendricks Regional Health Hospital, Danville, Indiana. He was born January 15, 1925 in Cloverdale to Ross and Minta (Hartsaw) Shillings. He married Ruth Marie Henry on August 21, 1943. She preceded him in death in 2004.
Mr. Shillings was retired from Alcoa Aluminum, Lafayette, where he had been a saw operator. He and his wife also ran the Shillings Country Kennels outside of New Ross. He attended New Ross Schools; was a WW II Army Veteran, serving with the 8th Infantry in the European Theater; was an avid gardener and was a founding member of the Montgomery County Farmer's Market.
He is survived by 2 sons: James Russell Shillings, Crawfordsville, and Thomas Darrell (Lynn) Shillings, Mumford, Tennessee. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers: George, Walter, Alvie, John, Paul, and Lon; 3 sisters: May Baker, Ruby Crook, and Mary Hatch.
A private family graveside is planned at Freedom Cemetery, near Waveland, with the American Legion and VFW Posts of Crawfordsville providing Military Honors. There will not be any visitation or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, 1104 Big Four Arch Rd., Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
