Mr. John Davis Thomas, age 88, of Waynetown passed away at 2:00AM Tuesday, January 6th at his home.
John was born on July 30, 1926 at Wallace, IN. He was the son of Joseph Bondurant Thomas and Beulah Margarite Davis Thomas.
John grew up in the Wallace and Grange Corner communities attending those schools and graduating from Marshall High School. He married Maurene Tyler on October 5, 1952 and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2003. John served in the 45th Infantry Division of the US Army during the occupation of Japan and then the Korean Conflict. After he returned from the service he and Maurene operated the Wilkinson General store in Wallace from 1953 to 1956. John then studied and graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis in 1957. John worked as a Funeral Director for Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown from 1958 to 1968 when he purchased the business from Darwin and Mary Servies. John and Maurene then operated the Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown until their retirement in 1991. John was a member of the former Wolf Creek Church and a current member of the Waynetown Baptist Church where he was a vocalist at both churches for weddings and funerals. He also was member of the Alamo Masonic Lodge (50+ yrs.), the Alamo Order of Eastern Star (50+ yrs.), the Waynetown Merchants Association where he served as secretary and treasurer for 20 yrs. He was a life member of the Waynetown American Legion and the Crawfordsville VFW.
John is survived by his sister: Ruthann Yater of Veedersburg,IN; one nephew J.B. (wife Joyce) Yater of Kingman, IN; Four nieces: Joanetta Hendel of Westfield, IN; Pauline (husband Terry) McMasters of Veedersburg, IN; Teresa (husband Leroy) Blankenbeckler of Veedersburg, IN; and Nancy (husband Joe) Shoemaker of Crawfordsville, IN. Also 13 great nieces and nephews and 18 great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and twin brother Joseph B. Thomas III.
Funeral services for John D. Thomas will be held at 10:30AM Saturday, January 10th at Shoemaker Funeral Home 202 Bratton Road Waynetown, IN.
The Rev. Ron Raffignone will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Wolf Creek Cemetery south of Wallace, IN. The family will receive guest at the funeral home from 3:00PM until 8:00PM on Friday. Military Honors will be provided by the Crawfordsville American Legion and VFW at the funeral. Masonic rites will be provided by the Alamo Masonic Lodge at 8PM on Friday.
