Kenneth Overpeck, 98, of Kingman, Indiana, joined his Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, October 8.
Kenneth Paul Overpeck was born October 25, 1916, near Bridgeton, Indiana, to Lawrence Everett Overpeck and Sylvia Ethel Nevins Overpeck. He grew up in a large and loving Christian family working on the family farm. He attended Rockville schools and graduated from Rockville High School.
On January 10, 1937, Mr. Overpeck and Leota Mildred Martin were married in the Rockville Baptist Church by Rev. Charles Barnes. They shared nearly 77 years together until Mildred's passing on January 7, 2014.
Kenneth and Mildred set up housekeeping in Rockville, Indiana. At the time of their marriage, Kenny was working on the farm and helping his father with the family appliance business. During World War II, Mr. Overpeck worked at the Newport Chemical Depot, and in 1946, Kenneth and Mildred moved their family to Kingman and started Kingman Hardware. Kenny and Mid were successful in the hardware business, as evidenced by many sales awards; they served the Kingman community for 22 years.
In 1954, Kenneth co-founded Overpeck Gas Company with his brother, Lawrence Jr. Kenneth was proud of Overpeck Gas and remained actively involved in the propane business throughout the rest of his life.
After retirement from the hardware, Kenny and Mid enjoyed spending winters at their Naples, Florida, home. They also owned a cabin in the upper peninsula of Michigan where they enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, and other outdoor activities. The family took annual fishing trips with the extended Overpeck family.
Mr. Overpeck was an accomplished golfer. He won many tournaments throughout his forty plus years of golfing and was Parke County Golf Course Club Champion several times. He had a 4 handicap in his prime, traveled on a senior amateur circuit playing tournaments, has had several holes-in-one, and could always shoot his age. He played golf until he was 90 years old. In addition to hunting, fishing, and golf, Mr. Overpeck enjoyed gardening, his apple trees, beekeeping, and studying the stock market.
As a Christian dedicated to serving Jesus Christ, Mr. Overpeck lived a godly life. He looked forward to joining his Savior and loved ones in his eternal home. He was a long-time member of Kingman Community Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent.
Mr. and Mrs. Overpeck were devoted to their family and invested countless hours in their grandchildren. Their influence on family, friends, and future generations will continue.
Mr. Overpeck is survived by two children, Nancy Ione Overpeck Duncan (husband Carl) and Rev. Rodney Kenneth Overpeck (wife Pamela); 6 grandchildren, Carla Nanette Duncan Yerkes (husband Keith), Cara Elizabeth Duncan Ruark (husband Dale), Arnold Kendon Overpeck (wife Jacqueline), Rodger Michael Overpeck (wife Julene), Julie Maria Overpeck DelReal (husband Antonio), and Coy Lawrence Overpeck; 8 great grandchildren, Reece Michael Overpeck, Sara Ione Cox, Benjamin Kendon Overpeck, Christiana Victoria Overpeck, Olivia Kaye Overpeck, Graciela Victoria DelReal, Nicholas Jasper Overpeck, and Victor Lawrence DelReal; a sister, Inez Overpeck McMurtry (husband Tom); sisters-in-law, Waneta Overpeck and Ethel Overpeck; and many nieces and nephews.
