LaVerne Kathleen Poynter went home to her Savior at 5 am on November 2, 2012 after a year long battle with cancer. She died at The Lane Nursing Home. She was born April 1, 1921 to Claude and Ethel Grimes in Russellville. She graduated from Russellville High School in 1939. Following the death of her mother, Claude remarried her beloved stepmother Helen Bushong.
LaVerne married Gerald "Shorty" Poynter on May 4, 1939. He passed away May 23, 1978.
She worked at Lord's Dress Shop; she and her husband farmed for several years near Parkersburg while she sold Avon for in Montgomery/Putnam counties and later on retired from the jewelry department of Jc Penneys. Church also played a big role in her life. She was a past Sunday School teacher, pianist and organist. Later in life she enjoyed running around with her close friends Peggy, Virginia and Harriett.
LaVerne is survived by two sons, Vaughn (Nancy) of Crawfordsville and Mitch of Crawfordsville; one daughter, Starlet Sue ( Larry) Powers of Crawfordsville; five granddaughters: one grandson; three step grandsons; nine great grandchildren; six step great grandchildren and one great - great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her stepmother and a step grandson.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Sunday, November 4th at New Hope Christian Church. Funeral will be at 10 am on Monday, November 5th also at New Hope with Rev. Mike Whitacre officiating.
