Mildred Overpeck, 95, of Kingman, Indiana, joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014.
Leota Mildred (Martin) Overpeck was born in Carbon (Clay County), Indiana, on July 24, 1918, to Archie David Martin and Elizabeth Jane (Rhoten) Martin. In her youth, Mildred lived in Mansfield and rural Rockville and attended Rockville High School. Mildred and Kenneth Paul Overpeck were married on January 10, 1937, by Rev. Charles Barnes at the Rockville Baptist Church.
The Overpecks set up housekeeping in Rockville where Mildred managed their home, and Kenny worked on the family farm and in the appliance business with his father. Kenneth and Mildred moved their family to Kingman, Indiana, in 1946 when they established and operated the Kingman Hardware for 22 years before selling the business to their children, Carl and Nancy Duncan and Rod and Pam Overpeck. Except for a short time on their Dana, Indiana, farm, the Overpecks lived in Kingman.
During their retirement years, Kenny and Mildred enjoyed spending time at their Michigan cabin and winters in their Naples, Florida, home. Having grown up during the Depression, Mildred learned to sew, garden, cook, and preserve food. She took pride in passing these skills on to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and games, fishing, and cooking for her family. Her family especially enjoyed her family meals and pies.
Mrs. Overpeck was a faithful and long-time member of Kingman Community Church where she taught Sunday school classes for several years. She was also a member of NGO Birthday Club, Missionary Society, and Home Economics group.
Mrs. Overpeck is survived by her husband of nearly 77 years, her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Ione and Carl Andrew Duncan and her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Rodney Kenneth and Pamela Jayne (Abel) Overpeck, all of Kingman. Mrs. Overpeck is also survived by three grandsons: Arnold Kendon (wife Jacqueline) Overpeck of Texas, Rodger Michael (wife Julene) Overpeck, of Kingman, and Coy Lawrence Overpeck of Crawfordsville; three granddaughters, Carla Nanette (Duncan) (husband Keith) Yerkes of Crawfordsville, Cara Elizabeth (Duncan) (husband Dale) Ruark of Kingman, and Julie Maria (Overpeck) (husband Antonio) DelReal of Batavia, Illinois; four great-grandsons, Reece , Benjamin and Nicholas Overpeck, and Victor DelReal; and four great-granddaughters, Sara Cox, Christiana and Olivia Overpeck, and Grace DelReal.
