Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cowan, age 98, passed away at 4:03 pm Thursday July 9th, 2015 at Whitlock Place, Crawfordsville, In..

Mary was born on February 20, 1917 on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada the daughter of Peter Donaldson and Ethel Marion Lawrence Donaldson. She was educated in Canada and married her first husband Stanley Best and raised their son James Best there. After Stanley passed away Mary worked in retail sales in Canada. Mary met her second husband W. Marion Cowan in Florida and they were married in 1988 in Canada and made their home on the Cowan family farm near Crawfordsville, In. and spent their winters in Bradenton, Florida. Mr. Cowan passed away in November 1991. Mary loved to solve puzzels and playing shuffle board. She had a beautiful singing voice and loved flowers and was a member of the liberty Chaple Church.

Along with her husbands Mary was predeceased by her son James Best, Step son Bill Cowan, Step daughter Marlene Chastain and six sisters: Jean, Dorothy, Nellie, Annie, Jessie and Gurtrude and 2 brothers: Larry and Norman. She is survived by two grandsons: Darren Best of Perth, Ontario, Canada and Brian Best of New Castle, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by her Stepson in law: Richard Chastain of Crawfordsville, In. and 7 step grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mary E. Cowan will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday July 15th at Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 Bratton rd. Waynetown, In. with Pastor Alan Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery near Elmdale, In. Friends and family may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Chaple Church in care of Janet Clements, 1623 N. Sommer Lane, Crawfordsville, In. 47933. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
