Mr. Michael "Mike" R. Melvin, age 72, of Zionsville, IN. and formerly of Alamo and Waynetown, IN. passed away at his home on Tuesday morning July 21, 2015.
Mike was born on August 4, 1943 to Howard and Elizabeth(Bayless)Melvin in Crawfordsville, In. He is survived by his wife Bonnie(Teeters)Melvin, his daughters Sheri(Greg)Howard of Petersburg, KY. and Sally(Michael)Pick of Malibu, CA. Step daughter Amy Reinhart of Portland, IN. and stepson Eric(Denise)DeHoff of Marysville, OH. Brothers Joe Melvin of Ladoga and Max(Mary)Melvin of Crawfordsville, IN. and a sister Mona(Rich)Clouse of Crawfordsville, IN. He is also survived by grandchildren Zachary Cravens, Evan Pick, Marsi(Justin)Roberts, Clayton Reinhart, A.J. Fuksa, Nathan Reinhart, Miranda Reinhart, Doug(Jena)Howard, DeAnna DeHoff, Carrie DeHoff, Justin DeHoff and 5 great grandchildren. Mike was preceeded in death by his parents, sister Sharon, nephew Bradley Clouse and niece Cynthia Melvin Duncan.
Mike was raised in the Alamo community graduating from Alamo High School in 1961. From there he went to Porter Business College in Indianapolis. After graduation he went to work for United Parcel Service (UPS) advancing to driver training supervisor. He was inducted into the Montgomery County Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. His brother Joe, his father Howard and several of his relatives from Alamo were also recipients of this honor.
Mike and Bonnie had many interests. He loved going to Michigan snowmobiling for many years, loved their dogs, was an avid reader of anything about Thomas Jefferson, gardening and the newspaper.
Funeral services for Mike will be held at 11:00am Monday July 27 at Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 Bratton Rd., Waynetown, IN. Burial will follow in Alamo cemetery, Alamo, IN. The family will receive guest from 2:00pm-6:00pm Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent Foundation Home Health Care, 8402 Harcourt Rd. Suite 210, Indianapolis, In. 46260 or to Actions and Truth Ministries, P.O. Box 18550, Fairfield, Ohio 45018. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
