Miriam R. Woodrow, age 95 of Lafayette, Indiana, and formerly of Kingman, passed away at the home of her daughter Shelley at 6:28 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016.
She was born in Parke County, Indiana on August 22, 1920, the daughter of Perry L. and Lucille Lindley Rusk. On June 23, 1946 she married Charles Orin Woodrow. He preceded her in death on September 2, 2006.
Mrs. Woodrow was a 1938 graduate of Waveland High School and a 1942 graduate of Indiana State Teacher's College, now known as Indiana State University, in Terre Haute. She was in the first class to graduate that required an elementary teacher to have a B.S. or a B.A. degree. In 1985, she retired from teaching, having taught 35 years. Her teaching positions were at Mishawaka, Rockville, Wallace, Newport, Kingman, and Southeast Fountain Elementary. She and her husband operated a funeral home in Rockville for one year. They then moved to Kingman where they owned and operated the Woodrow Funeral home for 52 years until they sold it in 2000. She was also a licensed funeral director.
She and her husband were avid antique collectors and enjoyed going to auctions. They built and operated Beam 'N Log Antique shop for many years.
Her present and prior memberships included Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Indiana Funeral Director Association, Kingman Woman's Club, Friendship Garden Club of Fountain County, Chariot Rebekah Lodge #517 of Kingman and the Waveland Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed many pastimes, but is especially remembered by her family for her beautiful flower gardens, her many needlepoint and cross-stitch projects, and her gift of hospitality. She strived to be an exceptional hostess at the many parties she gave in her home and in her classroom.
Surviving are two daughters, Cindy (Dave) Newnum of Kingman and Shelley (Mike) Marks of Lafayette, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kristine, a grandson, Zachary Woodrow, and a great grandson, Caleb Hart.
