Mr. Norris L. Kelsey, 93, New Market, passed away Tuesday, March 11, at 8:15 PM, in the St. Elizabeth Central Hospital. Norris' journey began in September 23, 1920. He was born in Manistee County, Michigan, to Walter an Nellie Hoffman Kelsey. His father passed away when Norris was seven and he was raised by Ottis and Mary Couger on a farm near Crawfordsville.
He was educated in New Market Schools, graduating in 1940. He was employed by R.R. Donnelleys from 1940-1942. He married Virginia Bannon on July 26, 1942, in Parkersburg. He was drafted into the Army on August 26, 1942. He served a year overseas in the South Pacific. He farmed near Waveland after discharge from the service. He also worked at Raybestos Products and drove a school bus for South Montgomery Schools for 12 years. He was a 75 year member of the New Market First Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and Honorary Deacon for several years. He also taught Sunday School classes. He was a member of the Waveland Masonic Lodge; the Scottish Rite; the Eastern Star; and the American Legion Post #72. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling. He loved living in McAllen, Texas, during the winter months. He was devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of 71 years; 2 daughters: Nancy (Frank) Powers, New Market; and Rita Pinkerton, Plainfield. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and foster parents; his daughter: Janet Norman; son-in-law: Ed Pinkerton; 3 sisters; and 3 brothers. The family would also like to thank his "Special Angels" Bev and Tammy Switzer for the loving care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 17, at 1:00 PM at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, with Rev. Wallie Nichols officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill North Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, March 16, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Masonic Rites will be conducted Sunday at 8:00 PM.
