Violet Maxine (Surber) Hocking

Violet Maxine (Surber) Hocking, age 89 of Crawfordsville passed away on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville.  She was born in Crawfordsville on January 18, 1930 to the late Hobart & Helen Christine Surber.

Violet attended Crawfordsville High School and on July 3, 1949 in San Francisco, CA she married the love of her life, Joseph John Hocking, who preceded her in death on May 2, 2004.  She was an active member of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church and was a loving mother and homemaker.  Throughout the years she worked as a clerk at F.W. Woolworth’s, was a district distributor for The Indianapolis Times, worked at the Messenger Crier and the cafeteria at Crawfordsville Schools.  She loved meeting people and enjoyed camping, canning vegetables, was an avid bargain shopper, and a great mother and cook.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry Hocking, Rickey (Cathy) Hocking, and John Hobart (Janet Mason) Hocking, all of Crawfordsville; two daughters, Sandra (Ron) Mendenhall of Ladoga and Rhonda (Dave) Commons of Crawfordsville; two brothers, David “Sonny” (Pat) Surber of Reynolds and Mike (Vivian) Surber of Crawfordsville; three sisters, Nancy Teague, Judy Whitlow, and Sue Sheets, all of Crawfordsville;10 grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Struck, Megan (Andy) Craig, Amanda (Nash) Arshad, Pamela (Daniel) Peters, Benjamin (Teresa) Hocking, Jennifer (Phillip) Rowell, Jonathan (Leah) Commons, Thomas Mason, Alexander (Jeongmi) Mason, Sara Mason; 14 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; three brothers, Joseph Surber, Robert Surber, and James “J.D.” Surber; three sisters, Patsy Surber, Goldie Surber, and Mary Elizabeth Surber; and a grandson, Matthew Joseph Hocking.

Visitation will be at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S Washington St in Crawfordsville on Friday, June 21, 2019 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.  There will also be a visitation from 10:00am till the time of the funeral service at 11:00am on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the funeral home with Dr. John Van Nuys officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill South Cemetery.  Share memories and condolences online at www.sandersfuneralcare.com
