Mr. Walter R. Barnes, 78, Crawfordsville, passed away Saturday, June 22, at 9:20 PM, in the Franciscan St. Elizabeth Crawfordsville Hospital. He was born July 19, 1934 in Danville, Illinois, to John S. and Harriet (Krauel) Barnes. He married Sandra Barnes in August, 1970, in New Ross. She survives.

Mr. Barnes worked in the Tool & Die Department at Sommer Metalcraft for 25 years, retiring in 2009. He also had worked at Bohn Aluminum, Danville, Illinois. He was a graduate of Catlin High School; served in the Army, Navy, and National Guard; loved to fish, golf, cook out, and be with his family.

In addition to his wife of Crawfordsville, he is survived by his children: Brenda (David) Barnes Taylor, Indianapolis; Becky Barnes Porter, Danville, Indiana; Don (Kristine) Barnes, Thorntown; and John Barnes (finance'-Cathy Brown), Westerville, Ohio. Also surviving is his brother: Gene (Evelyn) Barnes, Tilton, Illinois; sisters: Maryann (Maynard) Laub, Neponset, Illinois; Judy (Tom) Jennings, Catlin, Illinois; 22 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son: Randy A.; daughter: Toni Barnes; and 9 brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at 6:00 PM at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, Crawfordsville. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 2:00 PM until the service time. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home by the Crawfordsville American Legion and VFW Posts on Tuesday prior to the funeral.
