William Harold Furr

Mr. William Harold "Bill" Furr, age 96, formerly of Waynetown passed away on Thursday, November 12th at the home of his son in Crawfordsville, IN. Bill was born July 1, 1919 at Kingman, IN. He was the son of Luke and Georgia Flemming Furr. Bill lived in many locations while growing up including Kingman, Steam Corner, and Centenial, IN., Texas and California. Bill last attended Attica High School. Bill always considered Charlie and Mable Glascock as part of his family as he lived with them and worked for them while growing up.
After school Bill served in the US Army during WWll as a Staff Sergeant and squad leader of a machine gun company with the 696th Airborne which was part of the Company B, 473rd Infantry, 5th Army. He served in the European Theater in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily and Po Valley earning a Bronze Star. After the war ended Bill married Stella Hughes on March 2, 1946 and she preceded him in death on January 28, 2009.
Bill loved to garden, woodworking, photography, talking about his time in the service and the friends he made there. Bill operated the Anafam plant in Waynetown and served on the Waynetown Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years. He was a long time member of the Waynetown Christian Church. He was the Past- Commander of the Waynetown Legion. He had the honor of attending a WWll Honor Flight to Washington DC in October 2012. After retirement Bill liked to keep busy doing janitorial work part time for the Waynetown Post Office, Sommer Elementary School and helped out at the Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown, IN. Bill was a very strong Indianapolis Colts fan and armchair coach.
Bill is survived by his children: Dennis (Paula) Furr of Crawfordsville, IN., and Dawn Welke and fianc� Frank Wilson of Collierville, TN. He was very proud of his 3 grandchildren: Andrew (Jessica) Welke, Garret (Nichole) Million, and Andrea (Kyle) Posthauer and his 4 great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his brother, Eugene (Ann) Furr of Danville, IL., and his sister Florence
Epperson of Winterhaven, FL.
Bill was also preceded in death by 4 brothers: Everett, Donald Paul, Kenneth and Leroy (Buster) Furr, and 5 sisters: Kathleen Keller, Claudine Weber, Betty Furr, Juanita Craft and Margaret Keller.
Funeral services for Bill Furr will be held at Shoemaker Funeral Home on Saturday, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dorman Winger and Steve Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. with Military Honors at eh funeral home at the start of the services. Burial will follow at the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation on Bill's behalf to the Lafayette Honor Flight sponsored by the Lafayette Gold Star Mothers or The Wounded Warrior Project. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
